So emissions check is coming up for my ES300 (1995) and I have never done this before - though the one thing that worries me is that airbag light coming on. I’m hoping the reason it’s on is because of my father turning the car on without the instrument cluster installed.... That’s what I saw. But no CEL lights as of yet.

What should I look out for?

could just be an O2 sensor.

Sniffer or just OBD? If it’s OBD, all that matters is there’s no codes and that it shows “ready”. Make sure you’ve driven it enough since the last time you cleared to get the cycles to all complete and you should be good.

Everywhere I’ve lived emissions and inspection are separate. Airbag light would fail you on inspection, not emissions.

In which state, assuming you are in the US? In Texas, a CEL is an auto-fail. On the other hand, the airbag light (actually just a flashing code light) in my Miata has been blinking for five years, and I have still passed Texas inspection every time.

It’s an emissions test not a safety test. You should be fine.

I’m guessing it’s sniffer since my car was made before 1996 and OBD-2 wasn’t implemented by then..

Ahhh, missed that it was pre-OBDII...but anyway sniffer tests suck. You won’t know what’s wrong (if anything) if it’s otherwise running fine. Then if you get poor results it’s scavenger hunt time. Haven’t had to do sniffer in ages but when I did repairs had to be done by a ‘certified emissions shop’ and they got three tries to fix it then you were granted a waiver. You’ll have to check around your state rules to see how it works there.

Wouldn’t worry too much about it till you get it tested though...since you have injection, presumably a cat with life in it, and no exhaust leaks it’ll usually pass.

Now that I looked at it though, I found an OBD diagnostic port but I’m not sure if it’s for OBD-II...
